A RARE DOUCAI CONICAL BOWL
ENCIRCLED YONGZHENG SIX-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD

Finely and delicately enamelled in characteristic soft tones on the exterior with four floral medallions depicting flowers of the Four Seasons, peony, chrysanthemum, lotus and prunus divided by stylised lotus arabesques, the interior with a medallion containing two butterflies in flight amidst flowering sprigs (minor chip to foot)
8 5/8 in. (22 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

An identical bowl in the Palace Museum, Beijing is illustrated in Kangxi, Yongzheng, Qianlong, p. 202, pl. 31; one in the William Rockhill Nelson Gallery of Art, Kansas City, is illustrated in Sekai Toji Zenshu, vol. 12, pl. 64 bottom; another in the Gulbenkian Museum of Oriental Art and Archaeology, University of Durham, is illustrated by Legeza in the Malcolm MacDonald Collection, Catalogue, pl. CXXXIX, no. 378; and one in the Chang Foundation is included in Selected Chinese Ceramics from Han to Qing Dynasties, pl. 141.

A bowl in the Roemer Museum, Hildesheim, pencilled with this decoration but lacking enamels is illustrated in the Ohlmer Collection Catalogue, no. 45, where Weisner records a doucai example in the Victoria and Albert Museum.

A similar bowl from the Paul and Helen Bernat Collection sold in these Rooms, 15 November 1988, lot 10; other examples sold in these Rooms, 8 October 1990, lot 504, and 1 May 1994, lot 690.
