A Rare Openwork Bronze Phurbu
Tibet, 14th Century
The tripartite iron blade issuing from the fangs of a makara modeled around an iron rod, the handle formed from openwork straps joined to 'endless knots', terminating in a three-headed Hayagriva with stylized horse-head finial exposing the tip of the iron rod

J. Huntington, The Phur-pa, Tibetan Ritual Daggers, 1975, fig. 35. Huntington cautiously dates this piece 17th-18th century, when it was on loan at the Tibet House Museum, while more recent research supports an earlier date.
