Of rectangular shape, each has a rectangular yellow brass lock plate and reinforced corners that include ruyi-shaped fittings on the corners of the cover and bottom of the box.

Pairs of boxes are rare, and these boxes, with their fine matched wood and original patina, have the additional and unusual feature of metal mounts not just on the top corners of the cover but also the bottom corners of the box, which would have provided extra reinforcement to the bottom of the box, and make these boxes possibly unique.
