A red sandstone stele of Brahma and Saraswati

Seated with his right leg pendant embracing the torso of his consort, his extended right hand holding a necklace and his upper left hand holding manuscripts, wearing multiple necklaces, his face with almond-shaped eyes and long beard, the hair pulled into an elaborate chignon and secured with a jeweled crown, with attendants standing on either side and an inscription at front

Lot Essay

Though mostly gone, the presence of the swan or goose vehicle, combined with the mala, books and beard confirm that this god is Brahma. The books he holds are the Vedas.
