Lot Essay

The restrained inlay, with its central tablet of a foliate-tipped lozenge, relates to the French style of the early 19th Century and in particular to that of Bernard Molitor (d.1833, see: U.Leben, B. Molitor, London, 1992, p.118, fig. 119). The inlay also features on a 'Commode Antique' pattern of 1802 from La Mésangère's journal Meubles et Objets de Goût, 1802-35, no. 49 (see: S.Grandjean, Empire Furniture, London, 1966, pl. 17)
