Lot Essay

The grates palm-flowered truss pilasters with their lion monopodiae reflect the antique style introduced at houses such as Castle Howard, Yorkshire by the Rome-trained architect Charles Heathcote Tatham, and illustrated in his Etchings Representing the Best Examples of Ancient Ornamental Architecture Drawn from the Originals in Rome and other Parts of Italy, during the years 1794,1795 and 1796 London, 1799.
