Lot Essay

The pattern for this style of arch-crested 'Roman' chair, derived from the French chaise en gondole of the 1790s, was published in The Supplement to The London Cabinet-makers' and Carvers' Book of Prices, 1808, pl. 1. As recommended in the Supplement, this chair is painted 'Etruscan' black in the 'Grecian vase' manner. The pattern for its paw-supported arm featured in an engraving for a 'currule' chair published in Thomas Sheraton's Cabinet Dictionary, 1803, pl. 7
