James Winter, later James Winter & Sons, operated as a liscensed appraiser and undertaker as well as furniture dealer from 1823 to 1870, and traded at 101 and later 151, 153 and 155 Wardour Street, Soho, London. Earlier pieces bearing the same stamp as the one found on the present lot reflected the currently fashionable Regency style (C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture, 1700-1840, 1996, p. 57).
