Lot Essay

An oak wine-cooler of this pattern, with the lower edge inlaid with his characteristic lotus leaves, was made by George Bullock for the dining room at Tew Park in 1817, and invoiced for £23 10s. Although invoiced with Brass Handles it had lost them by the time is was sold by the Executors of the late Major Eustace Robb, Tew Park, Oxfordshire, Christie's house sale, 27-29 May 1987, lot 55 (£20,900). Bullock also supplied a plate warmer of a closely related pattern, lot 54.
It is conceivable that Matthew Robinson Boulton participated in the design of this pattern as in July 1816 Bullock thanked him for 'the Drawing of the Wine Cooler'.
