Lot Essay

Unclothed so that Roman girls could dress and undress them, Roman dolls are rare due to their nature of being played with, handled and broken. For a similar doll in ivory now in the Museo Nazionale, Rome, cf. exhibition catalogue, Rome: 1000 ans de Civilisation, Montreal, 1992, no. 186.
