Depicting a secutor, dressed as a soldier, protected by an oblong shield (scutum), and a greave (ocrea) on his advanced left leg, wearing a crested visored helmet (galea), his right arm protected with elbow bands (manicae), holding a dagger in his right hand at his side

Lot Essay

The secutor was the name later adopted for the Samnite-type gladiator. In addition to subtle modifications in costume, the name secutor reflects the trend in later years to categorize the gladiators more by their costume and less by their "ethnicity".
