A ROMAN MARBLE RELIEF FRAGMENT
Circa Early 2nd Century A.D.
From a sarcophagus, preserving a figure of Dionysus moving to the left, his body frontal, his head turned back, depicted nude but for a himation over his left shoulder, its ends fluttering behind, and an animal skin draped diagonally over his right shoulder, holding a thyrsus in his left hand, its ends tied with streamers, a wreath of ivy and berries in his center-parted hair, with long tresses falling on to each shoulder, the paws of a panther clutching his right leg, the arm of a second figure preserved to the right, perhaps that of a maenad, also once holding a thyrsus, a branch incised above
