Circa 1755
Each serpentine yoke crestrail with flowerhead eared terminals, the pierced interlocking Gothic arched splat over the padded seat upholstered in striped cotton, on blind Gothic fretwork carved square chamfered legs with pierced angles, joined by an H-stretcher with pierced repeating lozenge and flowerhead pattern, all feet spliced (6)

Lot Essay

These chairs copy a design published by Thomas Chippendale in his The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1754, pl.XXV. Chippendale describes these chairs as 'Gothick' and 'fit for Eating-Parlours'.

A pair of armchairs to this precise design covered in 18th century needlework and possibly from the same set was sold 'A Private Collection', Sotheby's New York, 22 April 1995, lot 100 ($74,000).
