Lot Essay

These chairs were originally custom ordered by Sara Delano Roosevelt (1855-1941) late in the 19th century. Subsequently, they were given as a wedding gift to Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt for their Manhattan townhouse at 47 East 65th Street, built in 1908. The townhouse is today known as the Sara Delano Roosevelt House and is owned by Hunter College.
