This French form of 'cabriolet' parlour chair, with serpentined rather than straight splats, featured on a suite of furniture introduced during the architect Henry Holland's 1780's aggrandisement of the dining-room at Spencer House, London (J. Friedman, Spencer House, London, 1993, p. 106 and J. M. Robinson, 'Triumph of the Spencers', Country Life, (Art & Antiques supplement), 2001, p. 132, fig. 3).
