A SEVRES BLEU CELESTE POINTILLE LOBED OVAL TRAY (PLATEAU DU ROI, 2EME GRANDEUR)
Circa 1769, blue interlaced L's mark
Painted en grisaille with a military trophy reserved within a tooled gilt band and a further surround of oak leaves and acorns on the pointillé ground, the border a similar garland linking four military trophies, a pink ribbon entwined around the garland between each cartouche, a gilt line outlining the well and rim

Lot Essay

A very similar cup and saucer with added berried laurel wreaths suspended from the pink bows and gilt laurel enclosing each grisaille panel concentric with the gilt ciselé band is in The Wallace Collection, no. C347. Jean-Louis Morin and Etienne-Jean Chabry are two artists whose marks appear on wares painted with grisaille trophies on the pointillé ground, appearing from the payment records to have been particularly popular around 1769.
