A Sicilian globular albarello
17TH CENTURY
Painted on one side with a circular ochre, blue and white scrolling strapwork escutcheon enclosing a crenelated tower, the lower part of the escutcheon with a scrolling label inscribed in blue with SEBASTIANO MASTROHIENI, against a blue ground with sgraffito scrolls and large yellow, green and blue thistles at the sides, reserved on the other side with a large circular scalloped medallion with a portrait of a moustachioed man, slightly turned to the right (broken through into two sections and restuck, with two associated cracks, chipping and flaking to footrim and flaking to upper rim)

For another example with a similar inscription, see G. Donatone, Ceramica Antica di Calabria, pl. 18 where it is suggested that it was made for the leading Gerace pharmacist who was active until the mid-17th century.
