The inspiration for this large memorial picture comes from a stipple engraving, titled In Memory of Gen'l George Washington and His Lady, by Samuel Seymour, published in 1804 and 1814 by J. Savage of Philadelphia. An illustration of this engraving is published in Betty Ring, American Needlework Treasures, Samplers and Silk Embroideries from the Collection of Betty Ring (New York, 1987), p. 101, fig. 165.
