Lot Essay

The Welch family lived in Cape Elizabeth, Maine where genealogic needlework was very popular. This piece is consistent with examples from Maine with its rose-vine border and pictorial scene in the lower half. For similar examples see Betty Ring, Girlhood Embroidery: American Samplers & Pictorial Needlework 1650-1850, Volume I (New York, 1993), pp. 249-251.
