A SILK ON LINEN QUAKER SAMPLER Wrought by Elizabeth Humphreys, probably Delaware Valley, dated 1836 Worked in green and peach colored threads with six alphabetical registers flanked by the initials JH/RH above Elizabeth Humphreys 1836, all enclosed within a meandering vine issuing berries and a wave border 14½ x 17¼in. wide unframed

Lot Essay

An Elizabeth Humphreys of Philadelphia entered Westtown School in Chester County in May 1841. In 1846, she became an assistant teacher there for about one year.
