A SILVER-MOUNTED D.B. FLINTLOCK BOX-LOCK PISTOL BY BENNETT, ROYAL EXCHANGE, LONDON
Birmingham silver hallmarks for 1782, silver maker's mark CF
With brass turn-off cannon barrels, brass border-engraved action signed on a ribbon within an engraved design of rococo scrollwork on the left, fitted with engraved sliding cut-off on the left, inscribed 'Royal Exchange London' on an elaborate rococo ribbon on the right and the top-strap decorated with a rococo flower, engraved iron sliding trigger-guard safety-catch, figured walnut butt profusely inlaid with silver wire shells and scrollwork carrying small engraved silver flowerheads (small pieces of inlay rising on one side), silver butt-cap cast in low relief, centering on a lion recumbent on a wall, and vacant silver escutcheon, London proof marks.

Lot Essay

John Bennett (2) worked for his father (also John) at 67 Threadneedle Street before setting up as Bennett & Rolf at the same address 1778-81, and continuing on his own at that address (opposite the Royal Exchange) until 1803.
