The peacock, as the vehicle of the eldest son of Shiva, Kartikeya, was a highly popular motif amongst the Ksatrya cast and particularly amongst Rajputs. A similar box in the Victoria and Albert Museum is published in Silver Mughal Magnificence, exhibition catalogue, Charleroi, 1987, cat.238, p. 159 (inv.02672(IS).
