Unsigned (Kyoto or Osaka), Edo Period (Late 18th Century)
Katabori, stained ivory; a figure of a Westerner facing to the front, his body curved slightly to his left, with a long curly wig under his wide-brimmed tasselled hat, dressed in a long coat with stylised designs, and knee-breeches, the six buttons on the reverse of his stockings of pale horn (three missing), two horn buttons also missing from the front of his coat, holding a Chinese-style fan in his right hand, his left hand held to his chest, the himotoshi formed by two holes in the back of his coat, the larger hole below the smaller
