Lot Essay

The rectangular herm-footed commode is ormolu-enriched in the French 'antique' manner of the 1770s with laurel-festooned tablets, flowered trellis frieze and bas-relief of an oak-wreathed urn; and is inlaid with a Grecian ribbon-fret enclosing a festive-draped and strap-work basket. It is copied from a commode acquired in 1886 by the Nordiska Museum, Stockholm, no. 48,644 and is illustrated in S. Wallin Nordiska Museets Mobler Fran Svenska Herremanshem, 1979, vol. II, pp. 80 & 81.
