Edo period (19th century), with kao of Toshikage and dated Kaei tori chushun (Second month, 1849)
Iron mokko-gata tsuba carved in sukidashi with seabirds over crashing waves beneath a silver-inlaid crescent moon, the birds and waves highlighted in gold zogan, the surface finished to resemble stone; one hitsu-ana plugged
3 3/8in. (8.5cm.) long
With Hozon tosogu (Sword-fitting worthy of preserving) certificate no. 451832 issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai (Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), dated 2007.2.12
