A Tanto [Dagger]
Unsigned, attributed to Echizen Shimosaka School, Edo Period (17th Century)
The blade hirazukuri, mitsu-mune, forging pattern itame with masamehada and ji-me, tempered edge ko-midare with nijuba, a dragon and tama horimono on the omote, a ken on the ura, tang ubu with one hole, nagasa 32cm., in a aikuchi mounting of Indonesian ironwood, the upper part ribbed and the lower part spirally grooved and lacquered with gold waves beneath the kojiri, the iron fittings ensuite comprise kashira, paired fuchi koiguchi, kurikata, uragawara and kojiri inlaid with maple leaves and cherry blossom in iroe takazogan, the fine same tsuka with a similarly decorated shibuichi tsutsugane with a gilt metal mekugi formed as a kiku, the fuchi signed Wada Isshin and kakihan, and a shibuichi kozuka decorated with horses and plants in iroe takazogan, unsigned, 19th Century, overall length 49cm.

Lot Essay

Wada Isshin (1814-1882) was a pupil of Fujiki Kyubei and later Goto Ichijo who gave him the name of Isshin.

Accompanied by a Tokubetsu Kicho Token [Especially Precious Sword] certificate attributing the blade to Echizen Shimosaka and another for the koshirae attributing the fittings to Wada Isshin, both issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai [Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword] on 14 June 1979
