Liberty's originally relied heavily on imported goods from the East. Ironically the burgeoning European market adversely affected the quality of this work and Liberty increasingly introduced their own ranges of metalwork, textiles and ceramics.
Arthue Liberty was at the forefront of those figures fostering the cult of Japan; he appointed E.W. Godwin (See Lots 26 & 27) as a departmental director in 1884 and was advised by Christopher Dresser (See Lots 13-16) before his own trip to Japan in 1888-9.
