The bacchante seated on a rocky outcrop with the infant boy beside her, the satyr at her side and reaching up, on an integral naturalistic base and later fluted giltwood plinth, the reverse bearing the signature 'Pajou f 1774', very minor chips

Lot Essay

This graceful terracotta group is a reduced version of the model exhibited by Pajou in the Salon of 1765, commissioned by the Marquis de Voyer d'Argenson. Another example, dated 1774 as with the present terracotta, is in the Louvre (see J.-R. Gaborit, ed., Sculpture Française II - Renaissance et temps modernes, II, Paris, 1998, no. RF 3025, p. 514).
