Seated at center in dhyanasana on a lotus, his left hand in dhyana mudra and his right reaching across the knee, with golden skin, dressed in crimson and saffron robes with gold floral motifs, surrounded by registers of miniature Buddhas seated in meditation, each also wearing saffron or crimson robes

Lot Essay

The iconography of 188 small Buddhas surrounding a central Buddha figure is from the group known as the 1000 Buddhas of this Age. The present example likely belongs to a set of seven thangkas.
