MAURITANIA, NORTHWEST AFRICA, 20TH CENTURY

This natural reed and leather embroidered carpet comes from the Sahara desert region of Northwest Africa. Used as floor coverings by the Tuareg tribes, the designs are often geometric totem-like motifs of an abstract nature, typical of other forms of African art.
