Lot Essay

Although bronze luohan figures of this type are often dated to the Ming period, the sensitivity in the modelling of the face and the treatment of the garment on the current are reminiscent of some of the figures dated to the Song/Yuan periods. Compare, for example, two gilt-bronze luohan figures sold in our New York Rooms, 21 March 2000, lot 159; and the other, 21 March 2002, lot 53.
