The application of white enamelling probably developed from an earlier method of slip-decoration where the white slip is applied under the glaze. The use of the white enamel allowed a greater control and a smoother finish as evidenced by the present box. Compare a similarly decorated Jiaqing-marked double-handled vase from the Weishaupt Collection, illustrated by Gunhild Avitabile, From the Dragon's Treasure, Chinese Porcelain from the 19th and 20th century, London, 1987, p. 29, no. 17. It is interesting to note the additional shuangxi, double-happiness, characters on the cover of the box which suggests that it was produced as a commemorative wedding gift to a member of the Imperial family.
