According to family repute, acquired at or shortly after the Great Exhibition (1851) by Henry and Caroline Baker, Henry being the son of the London architect Sir Robert Baker. Thence by family descent.

After seeing d'Orsay's work, a delighted Duke of Wellington declared that he was the only artist who had managed to depict him looking like a gentleman. The Comte d'Orsay was a leading social figure in London and Paris who, among other claims to fame, wrote a fashion column in London's Daily News in the 1830s.
