The centre painted with the centaur Eurytus carrying off Hippodamia on his back accross a river, Theseus drawing his bow on the distant bank, in a wooded river landscape, the border with a chocolate band reserved with blue ground panels with scrolling gilt foliage, between gilt bands with ogival and dot ornament, gilt line rim (minute wear to gilt rim)

Lot Essay

The centaurs had been invited to the wedding celebrations of King Pirithous (of the Lapiths) to Hippodamia. One of them, Eurytus, attempted to carry off Hippodamia, and a battle ensued. Theseus, a guest, was instrumental in driving off the centaurs.
