late edo-meiji period (second half 19th century), signed sukekuni o koku, asamikun no tame (carved by sukekuni for asami)
Naturalistically carved as a human skull encircled by a snake which winds through one of the eye sockets, the cranium carved in precise anatomical detail, fitted with a movable jaw and inlaid with sixteen teeth of lighter wood, the snake with eyes of inlaid horn
