Lot Essay

Compare the very similar ewer included in the exhibition, Art of the Six Dynasties, China House Gallery, New York, 29 October 1975 - 1 February 1976, p. 30., no. 8, where A. Juliano notes that this type of ewer began appearing in the fourth century, 'reflecting a new direction' - vessel forms moving away from a 'dependence on Han bronze prototypes'.
