Lot Essay

Professor Jaap Bolten confirmed the attribution to Bloemaert at the time of the 1998 sale, suggesting a date of circa 1625-35.
The drawing is one of a series of studies of heads of which a Head of a bearded man was sold at Christie's, Amsterdam, 15 November 1993, lot 12, while other versions are in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin (E. Bock and J. Rosenberg, Die Niederländischen Meister, Berlin, 1930, no. 222) and in the Herzog Anton-Ulrich Museum, Brunswick.
