Lot Essay

Datable to the 1620-30s, this sheet is closely related to a drawing showing the saint in a more frontal pose, also with a Franciscan brother (J. Bolten, op. cit., no. 282). That drawing, dated by Bolten to 1605-1615, was engraved in reverse by Jacob Matham (ibid., fig. 282a) and although no print after the present composition is known, Bolten thinks it may also have been intended for an engraving.
