Lot Essay

The scene probably depicts the Dutch encampment during the siege in 1637. As a comparison suggests with the picture of Stadholder Frederik Hendrik on horseback outside Breda in the Nationaal Museum Paleis 't Loo, Apeldoorn, inv.no.229 (photograph in the RKD), the present lot was probably painted circa 1670/80 for the clientele who could hardly remember the Eighthy Years War.
