signed and extensively inscribed, Ihnen Verehrter, Ihrer Lieben Frau und Schwiegermutter und Respektabeln und vortrefflichem Wünscht im Lauf der 1839 die besten Amüsements' der Unterzeichnete and signed with initials 'AM' (recto); AM [enzel added by another hand] Zur Intelligenz! Falls ein gewisses Album nicht mit nach Holland gewandelt ist, wo sich aller= dings das in Rede stehende Objeckt nicht schlecht conservieren würde, so bittet Unterzeichneter, selbiges ihm auf mehrere kleine Weilchen in Pension zu geben. verspätet zur Post gegeben. Lot Essay

Menzel began his career in his family's printing business which produced commercial letterhead and greeting cards. A lithographic version of this card is not known, and given the personal nature of the inscription, it was probably done for a friend of the artist. The 1979 exhibition catalogue suggests the recipient was Dr. Freidrich Puhlmann.
