Lot Essay

George Washington Olvany was a native New Yorker, born on Pike Street in Lower Manhattan, who led a distinguished career in law and politics. A July 28, 1924 article in Time magazine described Olvany as "a persuasive speaker" and he was considered by many to be the last Grand Sachem of Tammany Hall.
