Après l’obtention du second Prix de Rome et des études à Bordeaux, cet artiste Rochelais part pour la ville Eternelle en 1850. L’été suivant, il découvre avec enchantement la ville de Capri et réalise ce délicat paysage. Il écrira dans son journal à cette date en témoignage de son attachement à ce lieu : ‘Capri restera la plus belle ville du golfe de Naples’ (cité par D. Bartholdi, William Bouguereau. His Life and Works, New York, 2010, p. 96).
After receiving a second Prix de Rome and completing his studies in Bordeaux, this artist from la Rochelle left for Rome in 1850. The following summer, he discovered with delight the town of Capri and produced this delicate landscape.
