ADRIAAN RELAND (1676-1718)
Imperium Japonicum per sexaginta et sex regions digestum. [Augsburg:] Matthias Seutter, [1740]. Double-page engraved map with contemporary hand-colouring (faint browning to centre join), 498 x 582mm.

FINE COLOURED EXAMPLE OF RELAND' INFLUENTIAL MAP OF JAPAN. Reland, professor of philosophy at the University of Harderwijk, was an acclaimed orientalist who never left the Netherlands. He drew this map from a Japanese model, and consequently is the first western map to use Sino-Japanese characters. Seutter, however, omits any reference to his source. Walter OAG 80, state 1.
