Lot Essay

This signed and dated picture is unusual if it is indeed the work of Adriaen Verdoel and not of his eponymous son (also an artist, but whose work is hardly known). Adriaen Verdoel senior is only known to have died after 1695, and is usually thought of as an imitator of the work of Jacob Willemsz de Wet. However, this well executed painting seems to have been inspired by the work of Abraham Stork (died circa 1710 ?)
