Lot Essay
This painting was owned by Mr. K. Tirtosupono (Staff of the Voice of America in Washington DC, as an International Broadcaster, Indonesian Service) who has settled in the United States since 1957 to the present time.
Whilst working as an International Broadcaster at the BBC London, Indonesian Service Branch from 1950 - 1955 the original owner first got acquainted with Affandi and quickly became close friends with the artist and family. The wife of the collector recalled her involvement in Kartika's (artist's daughter) and Sapto Hudojo's wedding in the early 1950s as she sewn the bridal gown for the bride and helped with the wedding preparations.
Presently, at 76 years old, the wife still enjoys her favourite past time which is cooking. This is the reason why she has exclaimed "Crab and Lobster !" when she was asked by the artist what he should paint for her and the subject is certainly one of her favourite dishes. The present work is painted at the back of Mr. Tirtosupono's house in the United States.
The present book will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonne of Affandi.
