Sapper John Talbot Cornish was born in Lambeth, London and attested for the Royal Engineers in June 1900, aged 18 years. Subsequently embarked for South Africa, he went on to qualify for the Queen's Medal with five clasps, in addition to his award for Somaliland for services in a Telegraph Battalion. Cornish was discharged in June 1912.
