Lot Essay

After Dietrich's picture in the National Gallery, London. Signed and dated 1745, this painting is a pastiche of the style of Adriaen Jansz. van Ostade. Dietrich made an etching of the composition and painted a pendant in 1761, showing a woman selling cakes.
