Lot Essay

The present picture is after the celebrated composition that Wilkie painted for the connoisseur Sir George Beaumont in 1806, which was given by the latter to the National Gallery in 1826 (now Tate Gallery, London). The original was the first major work by the artist to be painted on a wooden panel rather than on canvas, reflecting his desire to emulate Netherlandish Art.
