Lot Essay

Emperor of Austria, King of Hungary and Croatia, King of Bohemia and King of Lombardy-Venetia, Ferdinand I was the son of the Holy Roman Emperor Francis II and Maria Theresa of Naples, who were first cousins twice over. Ferdinand suffered severe epileptic seizures as well as a number of genetic ailments, and his rule was monitored by a team of advisers including Prince Metternich. In 1848 he was finally persuaded to abdicate in favour of his nephew Franz Joseph.

A view of the coronation by Sanquirico, looking in the opposite direction, was engraved by F. Cassina and published in 1838 in Incoronazione de S.M.I.R.A. Ferdinando I, il Re del Regno Lombard-Veneto.
