ALEXANDER I -- PRUD'HOMME, C.F. de. Epitre à Sa Majesté Imperiale, Alexandre Premier, à l'occasion de son Sacre, 15 Septembre, 1801. Moscow: C. Claüdi, 1801.

4° (207 x 185mm). Contemporary green silk over boards, sides with gilt border, red morocco label gilt on the upper side, paper shelf label on spine (silk lost at spine, some soiling, corners rubbed). Provenance: C.F. Prud'homme (presentation inscription to:) -- Alexander I -- Nicholas II (bookplate, pencilled accession note) -- Plaza Book Auction, New York (sold, 24 November 1933, lot 605; ticket and description tipped in) -- Calvin Bullock (bookplate) -- William Doyle Galleries, New York (sold, 07 May 1997, lot 186).

FIRST EDITION. ALEXANDER I'S COPY, INSCRIBED TO HIM BY THE AUTHOR, AND LATER NICHOLAS II'S COPY with his bookplate. In his inscription dated 26 September 1801, Prud'homme records having wanted, and failed, to present Alexander the manuscript of this work during the actual coronation day; the author was evidently told that his verse would only be accepted if presented in print, perhaps so that it could be circulated. RARE: WorldCat locates just one copy, at Göttingen.
